ChuChu Rocket!

Cover Art

I never owned a Dreamcast as a kid, and so titles like ChuChu Rocket! might as well not have existed. So naturally, when I stumbled across the GBA version of this title I had no idea what it was, and that instantly made me curious. As it turns out, ChuChu Rocket! is a simplistic puzzle game made by SEGA for the Dreamcast, and later ported to the GBA. The mechanics and even some of the puzzles are the same from my understanding, although understandbly scaled-down to compensate for the weaker handheld hardware. Ultimately, the goal is to direct your mice across a chessboard-style grid towards a goal, all the while dodging enemies and pits. The beauty of the game is in its simplicity, while still allowing for some serious difficulty - this is the type of game anyone can enjoy. There isn't much story at all, and that's acceptable given the nature of the game, which centers around solving and creating puzzles. Aside from the standard set of 100 puzzles - with each set of 25 presenting a new difficulty - there are also multiplayer battles in which players battle to score points. Of course I couldn't test this multiplayer functionality, but it does seem to have a lot of support. ChuChu Rocket! is a great example of what the GBA excels at - simple games that are easy to pick up and put down, while still providing solid depth.
