Resident Evil Requiem

Cover Art

Although I have a soft spot for horror games I never got too deep into the Resident Evil series. I've played some of the recent remakes, along with the lauded Resident Evil 4, but not much else. Nevertheless, I had to give Requiem a try after seeing all of the initial praise. This time, you play from the perspective of two different characters - Grace Ashcroft and Leon Kennedy - who each offer their own style of play. Grace's sections have you playing a survival horror, where you tiptoe around enemies far stronger than yourself. Leon's sections juxtapose this, as the hardened veteran shoots and slashes his way through hordes of infected. I found the way that they interchanged stories to be great - it was refreshing to finish a long and stressful section as Grace, only to feel invincible as Leon. The story itself is good, if a bit overwhelming at times. One of the true highlights here is the cinematic presentation, which has the game feeling like a movie at times. My fiancée was watching at the edge of her seat at certain points, especially in the orphanage. Outside of design and presentation, Requiem is a blast to play. Ammo and consumables are distributed with a nice balance on the standard difficulty, and the plethora of "files" to discover makes exploring each map a rewarding experience. I had a great time with the game, but I imagine it would shine even brighter for a fan of the series - there are so many callbacks and returning characters that I only barely caught. Not only is this a great Resident Evil game, it's a great horror game and one that's definitely worth checking out!

The game wouldn't let me take a screenshot, so this will have to do.
