Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

This month in my gaming bookclub - Joystick Junkies - I took part in an Archipelago multiworld. Archipelago is a community mod that allows people to play traditionally single-player games in a multiplayer setting by tying in-game unlocks to other games progression. It sounds complicated, but just imagine that every collectible you get in a game sends a random unlock to a friend - this could be as little as a single coin in a Mario game, or as much as a key event item. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a game that I played a few years ago, and the collectible nature of the game made it a good candidate for my first foray into this new style of play. I'm not much of a modder, but it was relatively easy to setup with the steps on the Archipelago website. From there, I started skating around, picking up collectibles, and sending out "checks" to the boys. From my experience, it seems that each game is pretty different as some people complained about being gated, while I was able to leisurely cruise around between areas without much trouble.

As for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk - it's a good game! It plays like a spiritual remake of the Jet Set Radio games. The general goal is to tag different levels with graffiti to increase your rep all the while trying to unravel the identity of your character. The story pays homage to graffiti culture, and is generally a fun time throughout. This time around I skipped a lot of the story beats, and things were slightly jank due to the archipelago, but the game still held up just fine. I can easily recommend it to fans of 3D platformers, the classic Tony Hawk games, and a game with a good soundtrack.

Archipelago updates are sent via the in-game phone. Pretty cool!
