OneShot

This month's Joystick Junkies game is one that I had never heard of before titled OneShot. The game can most adequately be described as an adventure game, wherein you control what seems to be a furry OC named Niko. Made in RPGMaker, I was initially not too sure what to think - I have enjoyed some RPGMaker games in the past (looking at you Undertale) but I'd say they've typically been too constrained for my liking. This title is a bit different than your typical RPGMaker game though, and it makes that clear quite early on. Without spoiling much, the game makes use of system prompts, your game files, and other elements of your computer to create a 4th wall breaking meta-narrative. This provides for some much needed intrigue into what is otherwise a standard adventure game, in which you find and combine items to accomplish different tasks. Along your journey you will encounter a number of other characters, although they don't boast much in terms of susbtance. The soundtrack and pixel art are solid, but nothing spectacular while the core puzzles are simple yet fairly enjoyable. The meta-narrative is really the star of the show here, and I would say the game is worth playing for that reason alone.

The characters you meet on your journey are quite quirky!
