As a big fan of Dead Space, I was almost embarrassed to discover this game just recently. I've been making an effort to revisit the Wii U and Wii libraries lately, and as soon as I saw this I knew it needed to move to the top of my backlog. Like many Wii titles, Dead Space: Extraction is a light-gun shooter, meaning you point the Wii remote at the screen in order to shoot targets - in this case Necromorphs. The light-gun gameplay is fun, and features many different weapons to choose from, each with two different firing modes. Additionally, there are some mini-games scattered throughout that test other skills and provide a nice change of pace. I played on the Normal difficulty, and things were comfortable but not overly easy; there seems to be an emphasis on completion rating, difficulty, and score which add some replayability for dedicated players. I should note that I did experience one soft-lock during my playthrough, which caused me to lose about twenty minutes worth of progress - something that wasn't all too uncommon based on my research. The real highlight in Extraction is the story, which acts as a prequel to the original Dead Space. The plot follows several lore-relevant characters who were present near Aegis VII during the discovery of the Marker, as it begins to corrupt the mining colony and beyond. If you're a fan of the Dead Space lore (and you should be), there are a ton of references and bits of information to collect throughout the game. I particularly liked learning more about the USG Ishimura, especially as you get to see some more of the ship throughout your journey. In addition to the primary gameplay and story, there is some bonus content including endless challenge modes, and some more lore in the form of a digital comic book. All in all, Dead Space: Extraction is a very solid light-gun shooter that excels as a delivery mechanism for the scary and stressful atmosphere that the Dead Space franchise does so well.

Slicing the limbs off of Necromorphs is just as satisfying with a Wii remote.
